Revenue growth opportunities for mobile network operators include the healthy Enterprise mobility market segment, as a new enterprise mobility revenues forecast from ABI Research illustrates. Enterprise mobile application and service revenues will rise from an estimated $350 billion this year to nearly $430 billion in 2021 as enterprise-scale businesses move beyond managing mobile devices and networks to delivering a wider variety of applications to employees and customers, ABI said.

Business-to-employee (B2E) application and mobile device management revenues will grow fastest over the next five years, ABI highlights in a press release.

In addition, the market research provider forecasts more than 875 million business customers will have a mobile or portable computing device managed by their employers by the end of this year. That will rise to more than 1 billion in 2021.

“As user demand increases, many companies are now asking their IT teams to develop applications and services for these mobile devices that benefit the organization’s productivity and financial bottom-line,” ABI research director Jeff Orr was quoted. “As such, it is crucial that businesses take the time to understand how mobile applications and services can drive down cost and improve workflow.”

Use of cellular voice and messaging services is on the wane as a result, Orr pointed out. “It’s time for companies to move beyond enterprise mobility management and pivot their resources toward applications and programs that grow their businesses and deliver a competitive advantage.”

According to ABI’s enterprise mobility revenue forecast:

  • Total mobile and application service revenues to increase by 18% from 2016 to 2021
  • Global cellular voice revenues to remain flat from 2016 to 2021
  • Global mobile messaging (SMS/MMS) service revenues to decline by 3% by 2021
