The United States in general and Facebook in particular were well represented among the most popular app downloads during the 2010s, according to App Annie, a mobile market data provider.
App Annie looked at apps and games from the download and consumer spending perspectives over the last decade. Facebook held the top four spots in app downloads with Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp Messenger and Instagram. The next two entries—Snap’s Snapchat and Microsoft’s Skype – also are from the U.S. The top ten are rounded out by ByteDance (TikTok, China), UC Browser (Alibaba Group, China), YouTube (Google, U.S.) and Twitter (Twitter, U.S.).
The top ten in terms of consumer spending: Netflix (Netflix, U.S.), Tinder (InterActive Corp., U.S.), Pandora Music (Sirius XM Radio (U.S.), Tencent Video (Tencent, China), LINE (LINE, Japan), iQIYI (Baidu, China), Spotify (Spotify, Sweden), YouTube (Google, U.S.), HBO Now (AT&T, U.S.) and Kwai (OneSmile, China).

Game apps were not as dominated by the U.S. firms
In the game download category, the top ten are Subway Surfers (Kiloo, Denmark), Candy Crush Saga (Activision Blizzard, U.S.), Temple Run 2 (Imangi, U.S.), My Talking Tom (Outfit7, Cyprus), Clash of Clans (Supercell, Finland), Pou (Zakeh, Lebanon), Hill Climb Racing (Fingersoft, Finland), Minion Rush (Vivendi, France), Fruit Ninja (Halfbrick, Australia) and 8 Ball Pool (Miniclip, Switzerland).
In the consumer spending category, the top ten game downloads are Clash of Clans (Supercell, Finland), Monster Strike (mixi, Japan), Candy Crush Saga (Activision Blizzard, U.S.), Puzzle & Dragons (GungHo Online Entertainment (Japan), Fate/Grand Order (Sony, Japan), Honour of Kings (Tencent, China), Fantasy Westward Journey (NetEase, China), Pokemon GO (Niantic, U.S.), Game of War-Fire Age (MZ, U.S) and Clash Royale (Supercell, Finland).
The decade has been a great time for the mobile economy. “Throughout the 2010s we have seen our world transform,” wrote Adithya Venkatraman App Annie’s Market Insights Manager, in a blog post “We can now rent other people’s homes instead of booking a hotel (Airbnb), have food delivered from any restaurant we choose not just those that offer delivery (Deliveroo), and play console quality games when we’re on-the-go (PUBG MOBILE). Mobile has been at the heart of every one of these changes by giving consumers a window to the internet in the palm of their hand.”
