The mostly rural state of North Dakota tops QR Code Generator’s list of states with the best internet access, with more than nine out of ten (91.4%) homes served by gigabit cable or fiber connections by the middle of the year. This represents a 20.7 percentage point increase and 114,223 more homes with gigabit internet access as compared to December 2022.
North Dakota was followed by Nevada (86.4%) and Connecticut (86.1%). Nevada had the largest improvement in the country, with gigabit internet coverage jumping from 7.7% in December 2022 to 86.4% by June 2025.
None of these states had the best-connected city. That title went to Salt Lake City, Utah, with 95.6% of homes with access to gigabit internet. Utah was the fourth-ranked state, with 84.1% of homes now having access to gigabit speeds.
Nationally, 61% of all U.S. residential units had access to gigabit internet by June 2025, up from 32.7% in December 2022, a 28.3 percentage point increase thanks to the addition of 48.17 million new high-speed internet connections across the country.
QR Code Generator’s rankings were based on an analysis of internet connectivity data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) across all 50 states and metropolitan areas in the United States. The research tracked the rollout of cable or fiber connections with download speeds of at least 1,000 Mbps between December 2022 and June 2025.
“The data shows remarkable progress in bringing high-speed internet to Americans across the country, but significant gaps remain,” Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, said in a prepared statement about the report.
